In the end, I ended up doing practically nothing much this afternoon. I took care of some business this morning then after that..... I took it easy. I went downtown, looked at some shops, checked some clothes and cosmetics, ate some food, and went back home. Not even a dance class. I just felt like it. When I returned home almost midnight, the lady I am staying with was watching some movie and I watched it with her. It was rather a relaxing day. It is good not to do anything important from time to time. From tomorrow, I will have busy days again. There are only some days left before I go back to Japan already.... The important thing for me today was not to be productive, it seems.
あれもこれも、と思いながら、結局これと言って今日はなにもしなかった。午前中にいくつか用事を済ませ、その後はなんにも・・・ダンスクラスさえ受けなかった。ダウンタウンに行って、ぶらぶらお店をまわって洋服や化粧品を見て、そのあとちょっとご飯を食べただけ。なにも買うこともしなかった。家に戻ってみたら、ここの家の友達が映画を観ていたので、一緒にゴロリとなって観た。こんな日もいい。明日からまた忙しい日々だし、日本に戻るまであとそれほど日は残されていない・・・今日のわたしにとって大切だったのは、生産的なことはなにもしない、ってことだったようです。

セントラルパーク南西に位置するコロンバスサークル。真ん中の棒の上に立っているのは、アメリカ大陸を「発見」したと言われる、コロンバスさん。
Union Square at night. When I see NY in photos, I realize this town does belong to European culture. There aren't as many neon signs as Asian cities.
夜のユニオンスクエア。写真で見ると、NYはヨローッパ文化圏の中の街だと改めて気づかされる。アジアの都市のようなカラフルなネオンサインがほとんどない。

写真一番上：ダウンタウン五番街。このあたりは昔は、あまり治安が良くなく、人の寄り付かないエリアだったけれど、きれいになって若者向けのブティックやお店が並ぶ。遠くに見えているのはエンパイアステートビル。ツインタワーがなくなってから、今はNYで一番高いビル。全部で１０２階。建てられたのは大恐慌のまっただ中の、1931年。このビルの完成は、真っ暗な時代を生きていたアメリカ市民に希望を与えたという。日本はその頃、昭和初期。日本帝国植民地時代。
